your new moon ritual: the fresh page, explained (and done in five minutes)

woman in a pink pajama set standing at a bedroom window at dusk holding a glass of water, looking out at a moonless sky

a new moon is the one night a month you can't see the moon at all. that's the whole thing. no glow, no sliver, just a sky that looks like it forgot something.

and somehow it's the night the internet fills up with lists, intentions, and people telling you to "call in" your best life. if you've ever nodded along without actually knowing what a new moon is or what you're supposed to do about it, this post is for you. it's the plain version, the practical version, and a five-minute page you can repeat every month for as long as you want.

this month: the new moon in virgo

thursday, september 10, 2026, at 8:27pm pt, the new moon lands in Virgo. it's the first new moon since eclipse season closed, which makes it the calmest fresh start we've had since july. the same night, Venus moves into Scorpio (where she stays until late october), Mercury moves into Libra, and Uranus stations retrograde. four moves in one evening, which is why this one feels bigger than a regular monthly reset.

it is, a little. it's still a deadline with a nicer name. and Virgo is the sign of routines and small repeatable things, so this particular new moon favors a habit over a wish. hold that thought, it matters for step one. (tonight is one of the five dates in the september self-care guide, if you want the rest of the month.)

what a new moon actually is

the moon orbits us. once a month it passes between us and the sun, so the lit side faces away from earth and we see nothing. the sky isn't dark because something's wrong. it's dark because the moon is between shifts.

two weeks later, it's on the opposite side of us, fully lit, and we get a full moon. that two-week arc, new to full, is the whole reason "start something on a new moon" became a thing. people noticed a long time ago that a visible, built-in deadline makes starting easier. you can see the finish line every night when you look up.

that's it. no magic required, no special equipment. just a calendar written in the sky.

why "in virgo" (or any sign) matters

every new moon happens in a zodiac sign, and the sign is the flavor. it doesn't change what a new moon is, it changes what kind of start it favors.

a new moon in Virgo leans toward habits, routines, and the small repeatable stuff: the walk, the water, the thing you keep meaning to do daily. a new moon in Leo leans toward being seen. a new moon in Libra leans toward relationships and balance. you get the idea. when you know the sign, you can pick a start that fits the season instead of forcing one that doesn't.

this is where astrology becomes a wellness tool instead of a horoscope: it's a nudge about what kind of small thing to start, not a promise about how it turns out. (the habit angle is the whole virgo season gentle guide, if you want it at season length.)

the fresh page: a five-minute new moon ritual

here's the part you can do tonight, or on any new moon for the rest of your life. it takes about five minutes, one page, and a pen.

thursday night: three lines

open a blank page. write three lines, one for each question. first answer wins, no editing.

1. what i'm starting. something you'd actually keep up. the morning walk, the water bottle, the thing you've been calling "after september" since june. if the moon is in Virgo, keep it small enough to repeat.

2. what i'm done with. one thing, not a purge. the late scroll, the 3pm coffee, the yes you didn't mean.

3. one word for the season. pick it fast. the first one is usually right.

that's the page. close the notebook.

within two days: the first step

the two days after a new moon are when a page turns into a plan. take line one and do its smallest real step. book the appointment, buy the sneakers, send the text, set out tomorrow's outfit tonight. small enough that the week you don't feel like it can't stop you.

then: leave it alone until the full moon

this is the step everyone skips. once the page is written and the first step is taken, the notebook stays shut. no rereading, no editing, no daily audit. the full moon two weeks later is the check-in, and it's honest: whatever you started either shows up or shows you why it didn't. both count. (i wrote about that half of the cycle in the full moon release ritual, if you want the pair.)

the one thing not to do on a new moon

overhaul your life. the urge to rewrite everything on a new moon is real, and it's a full moon feeling showing up two weeks early. new moons reward one small start. the big reflective clearing-out has its own night, and it's the 26th.

✨ glow tip: the morning after

the first morning after a new moon is the one where line one becomes real, so make the ritual easy to keep. mine is a scoop of Radiance in the first coffee while i reread nothing. collagen supports hair, skin, nails and joints,* and the habit of one steady thing at the counter every morning is the part that makes the rest of the page stick. small, repeatable, virgo-approved.

if you've never done a new moon anything

good. this is a complete practice: three lines, one step, notebook shut. you don't need candles, moon water, or a crystal. you also don't need to do it at all. knowing what tonight is and choosing not to do anything about it is a perfectly good way to spend a new moon. both count.

if you already have a bigger new moon practice, the fresh page slides in before it and takes five minutes.

the questions i get every month

  • do i have to do it at the exact time? no. the new moon is exact at one minute, but the energy people describe runs from that evening through the next two days. thursday night before bed is perfect. friday morning still counts.
  • what if i miss it? the next one is in four weeks, and the full moon in between is a fine place to check in on whatever you did start. the page is a habit, not a deadline you can fail.
  • do i write on paper or in my notes app? whichever you'll actually close. the point is that it gets written once and left alone.
  • can i do more than three lines? you can. the three-line version exists because it's the one people keep doing in month four.

tell me your one word

if you write your three lines tonight, tell me your one word (@theglowgirlwellness). i read every DM and every comment, and the one-word answers are my favorite part of a new moon week. and if you'd rather just know what the sky is doing and skip the page, you're welcome here too. that's the whole idea šŸ’–

i'm Stepha, by the way, creator of Glow Girl Wellness from Southern California, and i'm the friend who reads the sky so you don't have to. astrology is the why around here. wellness is the what.
